Retro-Fit French Door Unit
Screen track and screen door installation instructions for a retro-fit French door unit with 4-9/16" or 6-9/16" frame.
  1. Step 1 Screen Door Kit contains:
    • (2) Screen Doors
    • (2) Screen Tracks
    • (2) Hardware Kits

    Hardware Kits contain:
    • (1) 2-part screen door handle
    • (6) 1" panhead screws
    • (2) 3/4" black screws
    • (1) 5/16" black screw
  2. Step 2 For door units with a 4-9/16" frame: Measure, mark and cut one track at 70-1/4", and the other at 69-1/4". Use a fine-tooth hack saw to cut tracks.
For door units with a 6-9/16" frame: Measure, mark and cut both tracks at 69-1/4". Use a fine-tooth hack saw to cut tracks.
  3. Step 3 For door units with a 4-9/16" frame: Modify only the 69-1/4" track.
For door units with a 6-9/16" frame: Modify both 69-1/4" tracks. Using a utility knife, score along the grooves on both sides of the 69-1/4" tracks. Carefully bend the top 2 legs back and forth until they can be removed. The remaining track will look like an "M".
  4. Step 4 Using a 5/32" drill bit, drill a hole 4" from the end of each track (one hole above the raised guide track, and one below). Drill 4 more holes evenly spaced between the 2 original holes, for a total of 6 holes per track. Repeat for both tracks.
  5. Step 5 For door units with a 4-9/16" frame: Mount the 70-1/4" track directly under the brickmould using 6 qty., 1" panhead screws through the holes you have drilled. Once the 70-1/4" track is mounted, mount the 69-1/4" track behind the first track, flush with the front edge of the head jamb. (See Figure 5a)
For door units with a 6-9/16" frame: Mount the first track, 2" in from the front edge of the door jamb using 6 qty., 1" panhead screws through the holes you have drilled. Mount the second track 1/4" in front of the first track. (See Figure 5b)
  6. Step 6 Remove excess pile (fuzzy strip) from the top and bottom of the screen doors.
  7. Step 7 Install the screen door on the inactive side of the main door first (door with astragal). Install the screen with the handle holes positioned towards the side jamb, the spring-loaded wheels facing up and the fuzzy strip facing the main door. Tip the top of the screen into the top track closest to the main door, and then lift the bottom of the screen onto the raised guide on the aluminum sill. Repeat this process for the outer screen, positioning the handle holes toward the opposite jamb. NOTE: Both fuzzy strips should point toward the main doors.
  8. Step 8 Install the handle set for the screen doors by snapping the two halves of the handle together (thicker half to the inside of the screen door) in place over the pre-drilled holes, with the handles pointing towards the center of the doors. Secure with 2 qty., 3/4" black screws and one 5/16" black screw. Repeat on second screen door.
  9. Step 9 Complete installation by adjusting the height of the rollers on the bottom of the screen doors (approximately 1/8" above sill) until the screen travels smoothly across the aluminum sill. Turn the screw clockwise to raise the screen, and counterclockwise to lower it. Each screen door has an adjustment screw at both bottom corners, for a total of 4 points that will need adjustment.
  10. Step 10 Your properly installed Mastercraft Screen Door should provide years of trouble-free service.
