Guide for construction of 8x8, 8x12, and 8x16 Shed.
-
GeneralPrior to beginning construction, the area selected for the shed location must be leveled and cleared of obstructions.
-
InventorySeparate all lumber, hardware, etc. into individual stacks of like items.
-
Frame Preparation
Unfold each frame, setting aside two frames to be used as end walls. From 1x4 pine boards, cut gusset plates 6" long: 16 for an 8' building, 24 for a 12' building or 32 for a 16' building. Apply gusset plates on each side of the top and bottom fold locations. Frames to be used as end walls require only one gusset plate at top and bottom on the side opposite the metal plates. Use four 8d nails on each gusset plate. See Figure 1.
-
Back Wall Framing
Using one frame selected as an end wall, measure and mark stud locations according to dimensions shown in Figure 2. Place the proper length 2x4 studs at those locations. Mark required lengths and angles. Cut each 2x4 to fit. Toe nail studs into place using (2) 8d nails top and bottom. See Figure 2.
-
Front Wall Framing
Using the remaining end wall frame, repeat Step 4, using Figure 3 as a guide.
-
Sheathing Back Wall
Place two 4'x8' sheets of wall sheathing face down side-by-side on a level surface. Place the back wall frame on the sheathing, as shown in Figure 4. Trace the back wall frame on the sheathing, remove frame and cut along the lines. Properly place sheathing on the frame* and nail into place using 6d nails every 8" on center.
NOTE: In order to keep moisture from absorbing into the sheathing, keep the bottom of the sheathing 1" above the bottom of the treated bottom frame member. -
Siding Front Wall
Again, place two 4'x8' sheets of sheathing face down, side-by-side on a level surface. Place the front wall frame on top of the sheathing as shown in Figure 5. Trace the frame on the sheathing and remove frame. Prior to cutting lines representing the door, extend door outline 1" in all directions. Cut "new" lines. Label the two cut-out pieces "DOOR" and set aside to be used later. Properly place sheathing on frame and nail down using 6d nails every 8" on center. See Figure 5.
-
Framing
From two treated 2x4's, cut two rim joists: 95" for an 8' building;143" for a 12' building; or 191" for a 16' building. Place the rim joists 8' apart in the area where the shed is to be set. Stand the front and back walls up at the proper ends of the rim joists. Temporarily brace both ends. Nail rim joists to the end walls using 10d nails. See Figure 6. Stand the remaining frames up: 3 for an 8' building; 5 for a 12' building; or 7 for a 16' building, Place a temporary brace across the roof frame members. Nail to rim joists at dimensions shown.
-
Square the Building
At base of building, measure diagonally. Adjust building until AC=BD. Building is then square. See Figure 7.
-
Floor Supports
From the remaining treated 2x4's, cut (4) 21-1/4" floor supports and the required amount of 22-1/2" floor supports: 4 for an 8' building; 8 for a 12' building; or 12 for a 16' building. Install as shown in Figure 8, using 10d nails.- 8' Building: Cut (2) 4'x8' sheets of floor sheathing to 95" long. Notch each piece as required to fit wall frame members. Nail in place using 8d nails every 8" on center.
- 12' Building: From one 4'x8' sheet of flooring, cut 2 pieces 47-1/2" long. Cut (2) 4'x8' sheets to 95-1/2" long. Notch each piece as required to fit wall frame members. Nail in place using 8d nails every 8" on center.
- 16' Building: Cut (4) 4'x8' sheets to 95-1/2" long. Notch each piece as required to fit wall frame members. Nail in place using 8d nails every 8" on center.
-
Floor SheathingFloor sheathing must be notched to fit wall frame members. Stagger end butt joints front to back.
-
Sheathing Side Walls
- 8' Building: Cut (4) 4'x8' sheets of sheathing to 47-1/2"x83" long. Apply sheathing in vertical direction. All splicing is done on centers of frame, and save cut-offs to use in gable ends.
- 12' Building: Cut (6) 4'x8' sheets of sheathing: 4 @ 47-1/2"x83" & 2 @ 48"x83". Apply sheathing in vertical direction.
- 16' Building: Cut (8) 4'x8' sheets of sheathing: 4 @ 47-1/2"x83" & 4 @ 48"x83". Apply sheathing in vertical direction.
-
Fascia Trim
- 8' Building: Cut (2) 1x6x8' trim boards to 96", if necessary. Nail to the exposed ends of the trimmed back roof frame members, using 8d nails. Top edge of fascia boards should be 1/2" above the top of the roof frame member. This will cover the exposed edge of the roof sheathing. Apply 1x2 nailer against building parallel with the bottom of frame overhang. See Figure 9.
- 12' Building: Cut (2) 1x6x12' trim boards to 144", if necessary.
- 16' Building: Cut (4) 1x6x8' trim boards to 96", if necessary.
-
Soffit
- 8' Building: Apply 1x6x10' soffit boards (cut to fit) underneath with 8d nails. See Figure 9.
- 12' Building: Apply 1x6x14' soffit boards (cut to fit) underneath with 8d nails.
- 16' Building: Apply 1x6x10' and 1x6x8' boards (cut to fit) underneath with 8d nails.
-
Gable TrimLocate and mark the angle of the peak on the 1x6x6' gable trim board and the angle where it covers the side of the fascia board. Cut and nail with 8d nails. Remember again to have the top raised 1/2" over the framing to cover the roof sheathing.
NOTE: Tack gable end pieces in place and check fit before permanently nailing. -
Roof Sheathing
- 8' Building: The total overall length of your roof from the outside of backwall sheathing to outside of front wall sheathing should be 96". Install 4'x8'x7/16" sheathing on the bottom of the roof slope. It should butt against the inside of the fascia and gable trims. Cut to fit and nail in place with 6d nails every 8" on center. Cut a 4'x8'x7/16" sheathing piece into 2 pieces 12-1/8" wide. Cut to fit and complete nailing the roof sheathing. Repeat for opposite side.
- 12' Building: Install 4'x8'x7/16" sheathing horizontally on the bottom of the roof slope. It should butt against the inside of the fascia and gable trim. Cut one end to fit on center of an inside roof frame member. From another 4' x8'x7/16" sheet, cut a 48" piece to fit the remainder of the bottom of the roof slope. From another 4'x8'x7/16" sheet, cut 3 pieces 12-1/8" wide for the tops. Cut to fit with ends on center of inside roof frame members. Stagger seams.
- 16' Building: Install (2) 4'x8'x7/16" sheets of sheathing on the bottom of the roof slope. It should butt against the inside of the fascia and gable trims. Cut one end to fit on center of the middle roof frame member. Nail in place with 6d nails every 8" on center. Cut another 4'x8'x7/16" sheathing piece into 2 pieces 12-1/8" wide. Cut to fit and complete nailing the roof sheathing. Repeat for opposite side.
-
Door Framing
From 1x4 trim boards, cut the trim pieces for the doors. Attach them to the previously cut and marked pieces of door sheathing. Apply hinges and hasp. See Figure 10 for dimensions. On the inside of each door, apply 1x6 pine for nailing on the siding. The outer door frame trim requires (1) 1x4 piece 79" long and (2) 1x4 pieces 81" long. Measure and cut 1x4x14' trim to all 8 corner sides. Overlap all corners. Fasten with 8d nails.
-
Finishing RoofApply underlayment & roof edge. Follow instructions (printed on bundles) to apply shingles.
-
Applying Lap SidingStarting at the bottom of one side, measure space between trim, cut a piece of 8" nom. siding to fit and nail on with 8d Siding nails. Continue up the wall, leaving a 6" exposure of the previous piece of siding. Continue all around the building, making sure the siding at corners evenly match up.
-
Finishing BuildingPaint and/or stain as desired.
