Guide for construction of 12x12, 12x16, and 12x20 Yard Barn.

GeneralPrior to beginning construction, the area selected for the shed location must be leveled and cleared of obstructions.

InventorySeparate all lumber, hardware, etc. into individual stacks of like items.

Frame Preparation
Unfold each frame, setting aside two frames to be used as end walls. From 1"x4" Pine boards, cut Gusset plates 6" long- 24 pieces for a 12' building
- 32 pieces for a 16' building
- 40 pieces for a 20' building

Back Wall Framing
Using one frame selected as an endwall, measure and mark stud locations according to dimensions shown in Figure 2. Place the proper length 2x4 studs at those locations. Mark required length and angles and cut to fit. Toe nail studs into place using (2) 8d nails top and bottom. See Figure 2. Cut 2x4 nailers and install at dimensions shown in Figure 2.

Front Wall Framing
Using the remaining endwall frame, repeat Step 4, using Figure 3 as a guide.
NOTE: When using a roll-up door, the door opening must be framed to the exact size of the door. Example: 8x7 Roll-up door will have a finished opening of 96"x 84". -
Siding Back Wall
Cut (2) 4'x8' sheets of siding into (4) 48"x48" pieces. Use 3 full 4'x8' sheets and 3 of the 48"x 48" pieces. Cut each piece as required. Nail siding pieces onto back wall frame with 8d nails every 8" on center. See Figure 4.

Siding Front Wall
Cut a 4'x8' sheet of siding into 2 pieces 48"x48". Cut another 4'x8' sheet into 2 pieces 24"x96". Cut each piece as required. Nail siding pieces onto front wall frame with 8d nails every 8" on center. See Figure 5.
NOTE: (for steps 6 & 7) In order to keep moisture from wicking into the siding, keep the bottom of the siding 1" above the bottom of the treated bottom frame member. -
Framing
From treated 2x4's, cut two rim joists:- 143" for a 12' building
- 191" for a 16' building
- 239" for a 20' building
- 7 for a 12' building
- 9 for a 16' building
- 11 for a 20' building

Square the Building
At base of building, measure across diagonally. Adjust the building until AC=BD. The building is then square.

Floor Supports
From treated 2x4's, cut (4) 21-1/4" floor supports and the required amount of 22- 1/2" floor supports- 8 for a 12' building
- 12 for a 16' building
- 16 for a 20' building

Floor Sheathing
- 12' Building: From two 4'x8' sheets of floor sheathing, cut 3 pieces 48"x47-1/2". Cut (3) 4'x8' sheets to 95-1/2" long.
- 16' Building: Cut (6) 4'x8' sheets of floor sheathing to 95-1/2" long.
- 20' Building: From (2) 4'x8' sheets of floor sheathing, cut 3 pieces 48"x47-1/2". Cut (3) 4'x8' sheets to 95-1/2" long. In addition to the cut pieces mentioned above, you will need 3 full uncut 4'x8' sheets.

Siding Side Wall
- 12' Building: Cut (6) 4'x8' sheets of siding to 71" long.
- 16' Building: Cut (8) 4'x8' sheets of siding to 71" long.
- 20' Building: Cut (10) 4'x8' sheets of siding to 71" long.

Fascia TrimNail 1"x6" to exposed ends of roof overhang using 8d nails. Top edge of fascia board should be 1/2" above the top of the roof frame member. This will cover the exposed edge of the roof sheathing.
- 12' Building Eave Fascia: Use (2) 1"x6"x12' trim boards.
- 16' Building Eave Fascia: Use (2) 1"x6"x16' trim boards.
- 20' Building Eave Fascia: Use (4) 1"x6"x10' trim boards.
NOTE: Tack gable end trim into place and check fit. Make any required adjustments in the cuts prior to nailing in place. -
Roof SheathingNail roof sheathing in place using 6d nails every 8" on center. Stagger sheathing end joints from frame to frame whenever possible.
- 12' Building Overhang: from a 4'x8' sheet of roof sheathing, cut (2) 8"x96" and (2) 8"x48" pieces, leaving a piece 24"x96". 72" Low Roof: Using the 24"x96" piece, cut (2) 24"x48". From a 4'x8' sheet, cut (2) 48"x48". Cut another 4'x8' sheet into (2) 24"x96". You'll also need 2 full uncut 4'x8' sheets. 45-1/2" High Roof: Cut (3) 4'x 8' sheets to 45-1/2" wide. From one of those cut (2) 45-1/2"x48".
- 16' Building Overhang: from a 4'x8' sheet of roof sheathing, cut (4) pieces 8"x96". 72" Low Roof: From (2) 4'x8' sheets cut (4) 24"x96". You'll also need 2 full uncut 4'x8' sheets. 45-1/2" High Roof: Cut (4) 4'x8' sheets to 45-1/2"x96".
- 20' Building Overhang: from a 4'x8' sheet of roof sheathing, cut (4) 8"x96" and (2) 8"x48". 72" Low Roof: From (2) 4'x8' sheets cut (4) 24"x96"; from another, cut (2) 24"x48"; from another, cut (2) 48"x48". You'll also need 4 full uncut 4'x8' sheets. 45-1/2" High Roof: Cut (5) 4'x8' sheets to 45-1/2"x96". From one of those, cut (2) 45-1/2"x48".

Door Framing
Cut (2) 4'x8' sheets of siding to 48"x94". Cut 2"x frame members as shown in Figure 10. Attach to door siding and attach hasp and hinges. Cut and attach 1"x door trim and crossbucks as shown in Figure 11.

Trim
From 1"x4" trim boards, measure and cut 8 corner trim pieces. Place (2) 94"-1"x6" on each outer side of door opening. Mark and cut (1) 1"x6"x12' running across the top of the door opening and extending out to meet the lower roof trim. Nail to building and hang doors.

Finishing RoofApply roof felt. Apply shingles using 3/4" roofing nails. Follow instructions found on the bundles.

Finishing BuildingPaint/stain to finish.
