E-Z Frame Yard Barn -8' Print
Overall Skill Level: Intermediate

Guide for construction of 8x8, 8x12, and 8x16 Yard Barn.
Build the Barn
Skill Level: Intermediate
  1. General
Prior to beginning construction, the area selected for the shed location must be leveled and cleared of obstructions.
  2. Inventory
Separate all lumber, hardware, etc. into individual stacks of like items.
  3. Frame Preparation
Unfold each frame, setting aside two frames to be used as end walls. From 1"x4" Pine boards, cut Gusset plates 6" long.
    • 16 pieces for an 8' building
    • 20 pieces for a 10' building
    • 24 pieces for a 12' building
Apply gusset plates on each side of the top and bottom fold locations. Frames to be used as end walls require only one gusset plate top and bottom on the side opposite of the metal plate, and to the inside of the building. Use four 8d nails on each plate. See Figure 1.
  4. Back Wall Framing
Using one frame selected as an end wall, measure and mark stud locations according to dimensions shown in Figure 2. Place the proper length 2x4 studs at those locations. Mark required length and angles and cut to fit. Toe nail studs into place using (2) 8d nails top and bottom. See Figure 2.
  5. Front Wall Framing
Using the remaining end wall frame, repeat Step 4, using Figure 3 as a guide.
  6. Siding Back Wall
Place two 4'x 8' sheets face down, side-byside on a level surface. Place the back wall frame on top of siding as shown in Figure 4. Trace the back wall on the siding, remove frame and cut along lines. Properly place siding on the frame and nail into place, using 6d nails every 8" on center.
NOTE: (for step 6&7) In order to keep moisture from wicking into the siding, keep the bottom of the siding 1" above the bottom of the treated bottom frame member.
  7. Siding Front Wall
Again, place two 4'X8' sheets of siding face down, side-by-side on a level surface. Place the front wall frame on top of the siding; trace the back wall and door opening, and remove the frame. Prior to cutting lines representing door, extend door outline 1" in all directions. Cut "new" lines. Mark the two cutout pieces --"door"-- and set aside to be used later. Use scraps to cover frame tails. Properly place siding on frame and nail down using 6d nails every 8" on center. See Figure 5.
  8. Framing
From treated 2x4's, cut two rim joists:
    • 95" for an 8' building
    • 119" for a 10' building
    • 143" for a 12' building
Place the cut rim joists 8'-0" apart in the area selected for the barn location. Stand the front and back walls up at the proper ends of the rim joists. Nail rim joists to the end wall frames using 10d nails. Temporarily brace each end. Stand the remaining frames up:
    • 3 for an 8' building
    • 4 for a 10' building
    • 5 for a 12' building
Nail to rim joists at dimensions shown and install a temporary brace as shown in Figure 6.
  9. Square the Building
At base of building, measure across diagonally . Adjust the building until AC=BD. The building is then square. See Figure 7.
  10. Floor Supports
From treated 2x4's, cut four 21-1/4" floor supports and the required amount of 22-1/2" floor supports.
    • 4 for an 8' building
    • 6 for a 10' building
    • 8 for a 12' building
Install using 10d nails, at dimensions shown in Figure 8.
  11. Floor Sheathing
    • 8' Building: Cut two 4'x8' sheets of floor sheathing to 95" long.
    • 10' Building: From one 4'x8' sheet of floor sheathing, cut two pieces 23-1/2" long. Cut two 4'X8' sheets to 95-1/2" long.
    • 12' Building: From one 4'x8' sheet of floor sheathing, cut two pieces 47-1/2" long. Cut two 4'x8' sheets to 95-1/2" long.
NOTE: Each piece must be notched on sides to fit around wall frame members as required. Nail in place with 8d nails every 8" on center.
  12. Siding Side Wall
T-1-11 Siding: Make certain grooves are vertical when applied.
    • 8' Building: Cut two 4'x8' sheets into four pieces 48" wide by 46" high.
    • 10' Building: Cut two 4'x8' sheets into four pieces 48" wide by 46" high. Cut one 4'X8' sheet into two pieces 24" wide by 46" high.
    • 12' Building: Cut three 4'x8' sheets into six pieces 48" wide by 46" high.
NOTE: Make certain end walls and frames are plumb (vertically level), before applying siding . In order to prevent wicking of moisture into the siding, keep the bottom of the siding 1" above the bottom of the treated bottom frame member.
  13. Roof
    • 8' Building: Cut two 4'x8' sheets to 39" wide by 96" long and two 4'X8' sheets to 45" wide by 96" long. Nail pieces into place using 6d nails every 8" on center.
    • 10' Building: Cut two 4'X8' sheets to 39" wide by 96"long and two 4'X8' sheets to 45"X96" long. Cut one 4'X8' sheet into two pieces 39" wide by 24" long and two pieces 45" wide by 24" long.
    • 12' Building: Cut two 4'X8' sheets to 39" wide by 96" long, cut one 4'X8' sheet into two pieces 39" wide by 48" long. Cut two 4'X8' sheets to 45" wide by 96" long. Cut one 4'X8' sheet into two pieces 45" wide by 48" long.
NOTE: For 12' Building: Working from the front of the building, on the lower portion of the roof, apply the 39"X96" piece first and the 39"X48" (39"X24" for 10' building) piece second. On the upper portion, apply the 45"X48" (45"X24" for the 10' building) piece first and the 45"X96" piece second. Use 6d nails every 8" on center. Verify all measurements before cutting, make adjustments as required.
  14. Door Framing
From the 1"x4" boards, cut the trim pieces for the door. Attach to the previously cut and marked door pieces of siding. Apply hinges and hasp. See Figure 10 for instructions.
  15. Trim
From the remaining 1"x4" boards, cut the trim pieces. The outer door frame will require one piece 57" long at the top and two 79" long for the sides. See Figure 11 for quantity and dimensions of the remaining trim pieces. Nail these pieces to the building using 8d nails.
NOTE: Tack gable end trim pieces into place and check fit. Make any required adjustments of the cuts prior to nailing permanently into place.
  16. Finishing Roof
Apply underlayment & roof edge. Apply shingles as per manufacturer's instructions (printed on shingle bundles).
  17. Finishing Building
    Paint and/or stain as desired.
