Painting a Steel Door
Skill Level: Beginner
  1. Remove door
Remove the door from the frame of the door unit by removing all of the hinge pins.
  2. Lay door flat
Place the door unit onto two padded saw horses.
  3. Lightly sand door
Remove all dust and debris from the surface of the door and lightly sand the entire door surface using a fine grit sandpaper. Note: Failure to sand the door will create adhesion problems between the doors surface and the latex paint.
  4. Wash door
Wash the door with a mild detergent and rinse the surface. Allow to dry completely before starting the paint process.
  5. Tape off glass
If your door unit has glass, use masking tape to mask off all areas of the door or frame that you do not want painted.
  6. Paint door
Using a roller, apply a finishing coat of high quality latex paint. Allow the door to dry completely before reinstalling into the door frame.
